Cut From A Different Cloth (Questions with Sky Welkin)

Name : Derek, a.k.a Sky Welkin

Q: Date of birth

A: May 26th, 1988

Q: Creative Occupation:

A: Cartoonist & Creative Director

Q: How long have you been creating art and clothing?

A: I've been creating art since 2007 and clothing since 2012.

Q: What inspired you to start your brand? Is there a meaning behind it? If so, would you explain to us what it is?

A: I was inspired by the ideas I had, cartoons, being an art enthusiast, and working at Commonwealth.  I partnered with my friend and former coworker Zeke to build a brand based off but not limited to my art.  I use a pseudonym like lots of my favorite artists do which is Sky Welkin.  It was a unique alias that I think served as a good name for my creative expression and would make me more distinct.  Welkin is another term for "sky" and I believe I came across it reading Beowolf.  As a brand, Sky Welkin explores themes of continuum, reason, and evolution like my art does. It's acreative outlet for both Zeke and myself.

Q: What would you say to entrepreneurs who are scared to take the leap but want to earn their own money and business?

A: I would say make a plan and go for it.  There will have to be revisions and there will be some failures but that is apart of achieving success.  Knowing yourself and where you want to take it is key in my opinion.

Q: What do you think is an important method to stay on top of fashion and what sells? Do you think that staying "trendy" is beneficial or should designers pave their own way and not give any fucks about what others are doing?
A: Theres so many brands and artists going for theres nowadays.  I try to hone in on our (the brand's) identity, aim to be distinctive and hopefully cool.  My favorite artists and designers definitely make whatever they want so thats what I strive to do.  In an ocean of consumers and creators I try to take solace in being myself .

Q: I've seen your billboards around the city. It seems to me that you take promoting your brand serious. What are your thoughts on marketing and promoting? What advice would you give to up and comers?
A: Zeke and I just wanted home (the 757) to know that we are out here gettin' to it.  This ain't a hobby for us.  We're serious and passionate about what we are offering.  Having billboards in our home town was like planting a flag in the ground so to speak.  I encourage up and comers to make their own splash in the culture in a way that makes sense for them.  The internet gives a lot of resources so use them.

Q: What are some things you think should be avoided when it comes to building a brand from scratch?

A: I think a lack of identity and doubt should be avoided. When you are truly building from scratch just know you are creating a definition/ context for something so be aware of how people are going to receive that as you build and grow

Q: Any future projects in the works ?

A: At the moment some gallery shows and maybe a mobile game

Q: What's your take on collaborating with other designers?

A: I'm for it if it makes sense.  You can click with someone as an acquaintance but maybe not so much as a creative and that's okay.  I don't believe in collaborating just for the sake of it though.  there has to be some common ground between our voices, platforms, styles, etc. For it to make sense to me

Q: Would you like to give any shout outs??

A: Shoutout to everyone taking the time to read this, those that are working on their dreams daily, my business partner and homie Zeke, and everyone that has been supporting my art and the brand.
